Apley (George) is born in Boston.

January 25, 1866

The title character in the 1937 novel by William Dean Howells, George Apley is born on Mount Vernon Street, graduates from Harvard College, marries within his class, and buys a home on the water side of Beacon Street, (thought to be modeled after 302 Beacon Street, where Marquand lived). Apley follows his father by going into business on State Street, and is subsequently described by Elihu Rubin as “Fussy, sentimental, farcically mannered, archaic . . . like Boston.” Apley dies at home on December 13, 1933.
